Berber Theunissen (Otterlo, 1989) graduated cum laude from the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam in 2013. Her work has been exhibited and widely published in various online and print blogs and magazines. Subsequently, Berber’s work was selected by Foam as a part of the exhibition ‘Photo Town’ in Felix&Foam, as well as being selected for the New Dutch Photography Talent in GUP Gallery Amsterdam. January 1st of 2015 she moved back to the nature, the surrounding that inspires her most.
“I focus my camera (a pentax 6×7) on things that affect me personally. Things that I love, but also things that make me feel vulnerable. I capture the situations I have little grasp of. Through photography, I create my own hold fast to view my life in a more objective way. This approach is placed directly next to my research and curiosity into ‘the other’. My photographs are reflections of the memories in my mind. I want to preserve what is otherwise lost forever; time. Photography helps me create a sense of peace within my chaotic being.
‘Seeking Beauty‘ is about trying to escape daily life, daily negativity and cruelty that we see everywhere we look. Obsessed with all the different kinds of moods and vibes we experience, day in, day out. Even the little things can cause an emotional rollercoaster of tears and laughter. We can understand some of these experiences, but others offer us no clue. I’m infinitely curious about how to cope – as a human being, physically and mentally, as a person, as a girlfriend. From the highs to the lows and every little thing in between, feeling just so small in an universe so big.”
‘Seeking Beauty’ is currently on show at Josilda Da Conceicoa Gallery in Amsterdam.
